Best research project in data journalism

Dr Adriana Mutu, professor of the degree in Journalism and researcher with the Department of Communication, has won the award for the best International Cross-Border Data Journalism Project (Transnational Research Project in Data Journalism) presented as part of the 9th annual edition of the School for Journalists and Media Practitioners organised by the Center for Media Pluralism (CMPF), at the request of the European Commission DG Connect. The CMPF is part of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy.

The winning project is the result of a collaboration between Dr Mutu with Italian journalist Adriana Urbano. The two authors proposed an investigation of the EU-27 state aid packages for audiovisual media implemented by national authorities during the Covid-19 pandemic. The longitudinal analysis and expression of the data through visualisation software will foster a comparative perspective between countries, which is one of the strengths of the project.

This project aims to investigate the measures and state support packages for creative media and audiovisual productions during the pandemic within member states of the European Union. To estimate the effects of the pandemic, these initial findings will be compared with annual public spending over previous years and the proportion of employment in this sector. The longitudinal analysis covers measures undertaken between March and November 2020. Quantitative data will be collected from national statistical institutes and open government databases.

In total, three prizes have been awarded as part of the CMPF 2020 call. The awards are international in scope and aim to recognise the work of teams of journalists and researchers participating in the event. We are talking about professionals dedicated to developing research projects and transnational journalism.

The 2020 edition of the CMPF’s School for Journalists and Media Practitioners focused on the media in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. The event was brought to a close by Věra Jourová, Vice-Chair of the European Values and Transparency Commission.

The Centre for Pluralism and Media Freedom (CMPF) is an international leader in the development of lines of research on freedom of expression and media pluralism. Since 2013, the CMPF has developed the Media Pluralism Monitor (MPM) project, a report that assesses the risks to media pluralism in EU member states and EU candidate countries.
