🎓 Altruistic and sustainable entrepreneurship with Sabaï straws.

Altruistic entrepreneurship, charitable work, environmental awareness, empowerment of women and a commitment to education are all the ingredients that work together in the Sabaï project. This entrepreneurial venture commercialises biodegradable and reusable drinking straws made of bamboo. The woman behind the initiative is Alejandra Borrell, a student on the Official Master's Degree in Management and Communication in Social and Solidarity Entities, who developed the Sabaï project for her Master's Project.

The environmental component comes from the fact that using the Sabaï will contribute to reducing plastic waste. This substitution represents a huge leap forward in Spain, where 13 million plastic straws are used every day, making it the biggest consumer of straws in Europe per inhabitant, according to Greenpeace data that Alejandra Borrell cites in her work. On this point, the creator of this project reminds us that conventional plastic straws take 500 years to degrade.

The charitable aspect comes into play with the destination of the revenue from Sabaï straws, which can be bought in batches of four or eight, as well as more. Money is directed towards funding school activities that the Camboya Sonríe foundation has in this Southeast Asian country. Camboya Sonríe's objective is to promote education and reading and writing in a country that suffers very low literacy rates, thanks to the repressive measures introduced by Jemeres Rojos. In Cambodia, the foundation's centre is in the zone of Prey Tholck Village.

Sabaï also works as a means of improving the lives of women in this area of Cambodia. Some of the students' mothers will be employed in the making of the straws. This allows them to join the working world, somewhere that women have always had difficulty breaking into.

Borrell's work, titled "The Empowerment of Women, through the Camboya Sonría foundation and the creation of the Sabaï brand", was directed by professor Josep Lluís Ortuño.
