Student profile

Prospective students should have an interest in social communication, current affairs and the operation and management of media outlets. Similarly, students who wish to study the Certificate in Sports Journalism should demonstrate a genuine passion for sport, an interest in understanding its social, economic and cultural dimensions, and the ability to convey the values of sport through various media formats with rigour, passion and ethics.

Applications for admission must be submitted through the Admission Portal. Candidates will be assessed based on their academic record and the admissions tests taken. 
Preferential admission will be granted to candidates who meet the academic entry requirements and who best fulfil the selection criteria.

The double programme in Journalism + Sports Journalism from the CEU UAO provides you with a comprehensive education that combines rigorous reporting with the excitement and dynamism of sport. You will form part of a generation of journalists who are capable of reporting, analysing and communicating with credibility, ethics and passion —both in traditional media and on digital platforms.

2. In collaboration with SPORT

The Degree in Journalism includes the new Certificate in Sports Journalism (21 ETCS in in-person format), which the university organises in conjunction with SPORT, a sports newspaper publication belonging to the Prensa Ibérica publishing group, and which allows students to specialise in sports reporting in any of its four media formats: press, radio, television and digital platforms. 

3. Employability

4. Communication HUB

The HUB is an interdisciplinary communication space with four specialised activity areas: 

• AulaNews: Writing a multimedia digital newspaper.
 AulaAgencia: A communication, advertising and public relations agency.
• AulaMedia: An audiovisual production company for the creation of professional multimedia content.
• AulaThink: A think tank to generate knowledge and carry out research in the field of communication.

5. Certificate in Sports Journalism

The Degree in Journalism includes the new Certificate in Sports Journalism (21 ETCS in in-person format), which the university organises together with the sports newspaper SPORT.

6. International programmes 

The Coventry University International Experience is a knowledge and culture exchange that takes the form of international teamwork (Online International Learning), short stays (short global experience study / field trip), Erasmus+ programmes and the possibility of double degrees.

CEU UAO students will have the option of taking modules related to Business and Communication, including Business Administration, Digital Marketing, Technology Management, Human Resources, Management and Project Management.

7. Progressive International Development

This new international experience programme encourages Communication students to internationalise from their first year to their fourth:

  • 1st year: Students will be able to interact and carry out research online with universities in Canada, Germany, the UK and the USA.
  • 2nd year: We explore global communication through short stays in Germany and the UK, among other European countries. We provide students experience in the European Union (Brussels) or at UNESCO (Geneva).
  • 3rd year: We prepare students for the international market with the Communication Lab Experience, an extraordinary stay at one of our partner universities in Canada and the USA.
  • 4th year: We broaden students' horizons through the Erasmus programme or through semester-long stays at one of our partner universities in Europe and the USA.

José Ignacio Castelló

PhD in Journalism and sports journalist. Lecturer at the CEU UAO and sports contributor for El Periódico de Catalunya. Former editor-in-chief of the sports section at eldiario.es and Crónica Global. Also contributes to the sports magazines Náutica, El Mundo del Caballo and Golf Monthly. He currently owns and is director of the website www.turf-cat.com, which specialises in horse racing, and has been named best horse racing tipster in the national press.

Lluís Mascaró

Former director of SPORT. Former director of Sports News at Prensa Ibérica. Has more than 40 years' experience as a journalist in different media outlets: he started out in 1982 at El Correo Catalán and, after working at La Mañana de Lleida and Diari de Barcelona, joined SPORT, where he held various management positions.

Collaborating lecturers

  • Arsenio Cañada. Former director of Sports at RTVE. Was a basketball commentator (ACB League and Euroleague) and a sports presenter on Telediario del Fin de Semana.
  • Alfredo Martinez. Head of Sports in Catalonia for Onda Cero. Commentator for FC Barcelona matches in all competitions since 1992. Also commentates on Spanish national team matches.
  • David Bernabeu. Reporter for SPORT TV. 15 years at Deportes Cuatro. 28 seasons following Barça. Contributor to RAC1, Esport 3, Onda Cero and Gol.
  • Joan Cañete. Deputy director of El Periódico de Catalunya. Former correspondent in Jerusalem (2002-2007) and Washington (2007-2009). Expert in audiences and digital transformation.
  • Christian Garcia. Journalist and communicator. Began his career in 1986 at Antena 3 Radio and joined Catalunya Radio in 1994. At CCMA, he rose to the position of Director of Sports. After 35 years as a journalist, a visual impairment has forced him to reinvent himself as a public speaker.
  • Sergi Mas. Journalist and communicator. Is currently programming director at Radio Valira and Pirineus TV in Andorra. He is also Head of Podcasts at El Periódico de Catalunya. He is a regular guest on RCD Espanyol news on television and radio programmes.
  • Gerard Romero. Sports journalist and streamer. Worked for RAC-1. Creator of Jijantes and its president in the Kings League.
  • María Tikas. Journalist for SPORT. Head of women's football coverage.
  • Aitor García Osoro. Journalist, corporate communications consultant and sports sponsorship specialist. Manager in the Communication and External Relations department at CaixaBank for national and financial media. Former basketball player.
  • Carles Pérez. Moto GP journalist for Dazn.
  • Miki Soria. Head of SPORT's digital area. Specialist in multimedia content.
  • Joel Mercè. Head of Design at El Periódico/Prensa Ibérica.

INTERNSHIPS

During the last year of their degree, students undertake compulsory internships in companies, offices or institutions in their preferred area.
These practical training programmes, which are included in the curricula, enable students to apply and complement the knowledge they acquire during their academic education, allowing them to gain professional skills that will facilitate their future employment.
The activities students carry out during their internships are defined by both the company tutor and the Internship and Employment Service coordinator responsible for the internships.
In addition, students also have an academic tutor who monitors and assesses their internship to ensure they gain the most from their stay.

Prices and scholarships

The academic fees correspond solely and exclusively to the provision of the teaching service of the degree enrolled on, this being the only service corresponding to the payment of those fees. By enrolling, the student consents and accepts that the teaching, tutorials, internships and evaluation tests may be in-person or remote (when the competent authorities so require, either directly or indirectly).

The obligation to pay in full the aforementioned fees will still apply even in the event that, for reasons beyond the University's control, some of the training activities included in the degree programme cannot be carried out according to the teaching schedule established at the beginning of the academic year. Should this occur, the University will guarantee the student that said activity will be rescheduled when possible, taking into account the interest of the students and other academic criteria that may apply.

RESERVING YOUR PLACE

Once you've been accepted on the course, you can reserve your place at the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU, which guarantees you a place at the UAO CEU while waiting to pass the university entrance exam* or other entry requirements, by paying a deposit of €1500 (which will be deducted from the total price of the course).


*Reservation of your place will be effective exclusively for the ordinary examination period (June) for the Baccalaureate University Entrance exam. Candidates who do not pass the Baccalaureate University Entrance exam or other entry requirements for studies included in the ordinary examination period (June) but have paid the Place Reservation fee will be prioritised in the September enrolment if the University has places available on the degree course requested.

Quality and regulations 

STUDENT PROFILE

Students should have an interest in social communication, current affairs and the functioning of the media and its management. Similarly, students wishing to study the Certificate in Sports Journalism must demonstrate a genuine passion for sports, an interest in understanding its social, economic and cultural dimensions, and the ability to convey the values of sport through the various media with rigour, passion and ethics. 

They must also be able to express themselves both orally and in writing and to analyse and diagnose problems and propose solutions. They should also have analytical, synthesising and group relation skills, a flair for understanding and abstraction, be sociable, and have a broad vision of the world and a perspective on its possible evolution.

Knowledge of another language (preferably English), as well as an aptitude for communication, is also desirable and necessary.

OBJECTIVES

  • To be able to express oneself clearly and precisely in order to convey information effectively.
  • To have in-depth knowledge of the techniques of searching, identifying, gathering and processing information and how to apply them in order to work with sources and write news pieces that reflect current events and give them meaning.
  • To understand and be able to critically evaluate the present in order to be able to communicate events as truthfully as possible, as well as to have a cultural and historical framework that makes it possible to contextualise them, explain their background and causes or their foreseeable consequences.
  • To lead news projects, coordinate journalistic teams or direct media outlets.
  • To have sufficient knowledge of the most relevant concepts, categories, theories and aspects of the various branches of information-communication research.
  • To become a journalist of integrity who, in the professional practice of reporting, is mindful of the social responsibility of the media.
